Summary
Virgil Flowers, an "idiosyncratic, thorougly ingratiating hero" is tasked with apprehending the most coldly efficient killer he's ever pursued. Flowers is in bed with an ex-wife (the second one) late one humid summer night when he receives a startling phone call. It's his old associate Lucas Davenport, and the news couldn't be worse. A dead body has turned up with two bullets to the head and a lemon stuffed in its mouth--just like the corpse authorities found last week. As Flowers pluges headlong into the investigation, it quickly becomes apparent that someone is keeping a hit list. Evidently the list includes a great many names--and Virgil Flowers just might be near the top.
